Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the second film adaptation of the Marvel comic books of the same name. We were first introduced the band of misfits in 2014, where we saw the creation of their crime fighting/creating collective.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we are reintroduced to the Guardians, who are hired by the Sovereign to safeguard their invaluable batteries. Their mission finds an unfortunate end once it is revealed that Rocket has stolen said items. This treason results in an intergalactic manhunt that results in Peter being reunited with his absent and mysterious father.

As a rule of thumb, it’s often easier to assume sequels will not live up to their predaceous. That being said, this second instalment has left me pleasantly surprised; with its comical script, beautiful cinematography, and fantastic soundtrack, you can’t help but enjoy both.

Peter is a human, exploring and saving the universe, one mission at a time.  His one prised possession is his Walkman of 80s music, which also acts as the soundtrack of the film. The 70/80s influence on the film leads to some hilarious retro referencing, from Pacman, Cheers, and Mary Poppins, his crew is left bamboozled as to what he’s on about. However, as we are privy to these, we can relate to the pop culture references, making Peter’s enthusiasm and his crews bewilderment even more entertaining.

Sometimes we just need to laugh, so I would recommend this galactic family drama to anyone who enjoys an action, comedy, or drama. And if that doesn’t persuade you, how about a big blue mercenary shouting – “I’m Mary Poppins, Y’all!
